Welcome back to RealClear Podcast. This is your host, lucas Klein. We're going to go through a daily release today as news stories emerge that are relevant to everybody In terms of economics and policymaking. Inflation rose around 3% as of January, which was higher than expected, and at the same time, the S&P 500 hit an all-time high consecutively, amidst scrutiny of the Federal Reserve. Amidst scrutiny of the Federal Reserve. This comes at a topsy-turvy time in American economics, where corporations are laying off major swaths of their workforce Chevron is the recent one to join the flock, cutting up to around 20% of its global workforce, not just including the United States and the Trump administration is also announcing plans to inspect the US gold reserves at Fort Knox, and some believe that this could lead to a re-evaluation of treasury services, and this may increase the value of treasury holdings, which could offset the government spending and reduce the need for borrowing. Trump's ultimate wish here is to create what he calls a sovereign wealth fund.
Speaker 1:There's mixed news here, because Scott Besant, the treasury secretary, has stated that there are no new plans for a re-evaluation of Fort Knox, and everyone's paying attention to the new administration and what they're doing Right now. President Trump has directed the Pentagon to reduce budget by 8% over the next five years. In addition, the IRS is going to lay off 6,700 employees and there's going to be more cuts in the future. In other Trumpian news, he has moved to expand access to in vitro fertilization. That's very interesting because I've known a number of people who have been under the belief that President Trump is anti-IVF. But he's very pro-IVF and this is proof of that. You can hate him for other reasons if you wish, but this doesn't seem to be one of the issues that should be a stick in your craw. The United States right now is withholding foreign aid contracts despite judicial orders, so there is a bit of a tension going on there across the State Department and the judiciary. The State Department is also reviewing media subscriptions, with potential budget cuts there, because they've been finding things like $10,000 Politico subscriptions for small departments, whereas you and I could get a Politico subscription for quite a lot cheaper than that. It's just an online magazine, of course. If you read Reuters' review on this, it says that this decision has raised concerns about limiting access to critical information for diplomatic operations. Meanwhile, one of the subscriptions being canceled is Reuters, so that commentary from Reuters may have a close-to-home cause.
Speaker 1:In military news, we are improving our icbm test capacities with the us military now successfully having completed a test launch of an unarmed minuteman 3, and it traveled an immense distance 4200 miles to the ronald reagan ballistic missile defense test site in the marshall islands. This was a routine test and was meant to demonstrate and assess for the reliability of the US nuclear deterrent. Meanwhile, president Trump has moved to try to have an arms reduction with China and Russia regarding US armaments of nuclear warheads. It's very interesting. That's a typical Democrat position in times of the past that Trump possesses there, in addition to his IVF position and other things. Whether you love, hate or optimistically cautious or cautiously skeptical of Donald Trump, you have to admit there's a unique combination of ingredients in this man and in his administration.
Speaker 1:In criminal news, sean Diddy Combs, the entertainer who is facing charges of sex trafficking, racketeering and fraud, has his legal team now arguing that he's being racially targeted. I don't think anybody is going to go down that rabbit hole with him at this time the 2020s and 21s are over. I think he's going to be looking at probably 15 to 20 years in prison, maybe more. And in confirmation news, kash Patel has been confirmed as the FBI director in the Senate, despite a deep and divided debate regarding his hearing. In Middle East news, the New York Times reports that, with coffins and taunts, hamas hands dead hostages to Israel, and there are stories that they have put propaganda material in the hostages' coffins. But don't expect any US college students to be camping out against Hamas anytime soon. Okay, that's the news for today and I'll be with you soon, and don't forget to subscribe and share with others. Thank you.
